What Is a Monologue?

If you have a friend or relative who likes to hear himself talk, you already know what a monologue is.  It is an uninterrupted, one-sided conversation in which a person — a college professor, your drunk friend at a wedding anniversary party— addresses a specific audience. Dating back to ancient Greek drama, where they played an essential role, monologues remain the main feature of plays and films. 

Monologues provide character development, give an explanation, or identify key themes.

Follow these winning tips when choosing one

Finding good audition material seems to be a pain in the ass for many actors. I began to fully appreciate how actors kill selection chances. Many actors simply choose bad audition monologs for themselves. The reality is, if you are going to audition for films and TV (also especially for theater), monologs are going to be required of you fairly regularly. You can help yourself immensely if you follow some simple tips.

1. Know your "type" and be realistic about it.

A good way of discovering this to ask other actor friends, your acting coach and people in the industry. If you choose a piece that is something you’d "LIKE to do" as opposed to something that truly suits you, you are unlikely to stand out among the competition- there will be plenty of others who are type same casting type, better looking and more experienced or better prepared for the same audition

2. Know your age range 

Again, be realistic about this and ask friends, your acting coach or people in the industry for honest opinions about your screen age then stick to that age range. For example, if your screen age is 23 to 30 and if you prepare or select a monolog spoken by 60 years old man, well then you know it would be absolutely out of the place and the casting directors would notice instantly.

3. Enter the room with confidence

If hands are offered, shake them. Look the auditors in the eyes during introductions i. Introduce yourself and let them know what piece you are doing and who the source/s. Remember to smile and show off your confidence.

4. Short And Sweet

A monolog that’s between 1 minute to 2 minutes is great. More than that is beginning to push it too much. A monolog audition should work to spark the auditor’s imagination, not be an attempt to cram everything you can do with a one piece of text.

5. Imagine

Simply put, your monolog should express as if you are talking something to your scene partner whether partner present to absent. In this way, every monolog is actually a dialogue, a give and take between you and a silent, invisible scene partner.

6. Don't tell just a story

This is related to #2. So often actors create monologs which simply tell a story or reflect on a memory. These pieces become inactive 99% of the time and highlight the matter rather than you.

7. Avoid pieces that are full of violence, sex or offensive language

Remember that an audition is, after all, a job interview. Often the casting director doesn't know anything about you apart from what we see in the audition. "A lot of offensive language or pieces that contain descriptions of graphic violent or sexual acts are just in bad taste at an audition

8. Entertain auditioners 

No one in the industry wants to watch an actor working really hard to impress them with their "acting" especially if the piece is boring or mediocre. Choose a monolog you love doing so we will love watching you.

9. Great Monologs often start out as dialogue

When you are looking for pieces, don’t just assume that a perfectly crafted minute-long monolog right there is going to jump out at you. Some of the best monologs I have are ones that I’ve pieced together from one story or character’s dialogue in a scene. Perhaps, starting with a question, demanding something from an invisible person or asking an opinion and then proceeding

10.  Avoid the monologs that are common and overdone

Many actors make a mistake of preparing a monolog from Bollywood classic films and TV serials like from Sholay, Pyaasa, Guide, Dil To Paagal Hai and so on whether or not it suits them or not. Most casting directors are tired of listening to these pieces repeatedly and they may suddenly lose interest in you. So, be careful.

11. Reflect your good taste

This is to say that choosing monolog for its giving "shock" value or for example too dramatic irritability, bursts of anger or sexually abuse can backfire if you bring it into an audition room. Content matters of course, but not everyone loves hearing 20 bombs in 60 seconds. Not everyone loves hearing pieces about being sexually abused. Not everyone loves watching an actor rage at the top of their lungs.Take the right risks, not the cheap ones.

12. Play to your strengths 

It’s great to experiment and try a wide range of monologs to practice but when it comes to what you choose to use for auditions, play to your strengths and show yourself being the best that you can be.
Choose a monolog with shifts in emotion
I'm sure you must have been knowing how to portray at least 9 types of emotions and different attitudes (In acting class or by your acting coach). The most interesting monologs to watch are the ones with changes in emotion, rhythm, and tempo. This will make it more compelling to watch and will show more of what you are capable of.

13. Don’t be a magician and hide behind tricks

Hands down the biggest mistake I see in the audition room is actors hiding behind the tricks and gimmicks of their pieces. Being showy is the easiest choice and almost always the wrong one. Tossing props, exaggerated gestures, picking up things from the casting director's table are some of the examples.

14. Do not change your accent. Stick to your own accent

You’ve been invited to the audition because of who you are, and if you deliver your monolog in a different accent, you won’t be giving them what they wanted when they called you in- which is you! The exception to this, of course, is if you have been asked to do a different accent, and even then only go for it if you are flawless.

• Identify and procure names and contact details I got it here for you
• Keep ready your best portfolio, resume, video introduction (2 minutes), show-reel (clips if done some films or serials) or film through your mobile any scene
• Start e-mailing to all with no expectations
• Learn developing networking and public relation techniques like how to talk, smile, language, voice dress and deal with people at all levels. Be charming. Please note that in the beginning,  you may not be able to meet top people like producer Karan Johar or casting director Mukesh Chhabra and your first contact may be their assist / receptionist etc. who are gatekeepers of top people. These lower level people are extremely important to your success mission to help you to develop contact with top industry persons.
• Make a daily plan to visit  at least 4 people  from the list below. Develop persistence. Don't give up.  Visit repeatedly till you meet them.
• Don't pay any money to anybody at any level. However, keep small gifts like pens, small diaries, card holders, small bottles of hand sanitizers, small size packets of tissue papers etc for gatekeepers and junior contacts.
• Once you are successful in contacting concerned people, immediately thank them by email, post but never through a phone call unless they give you their contact No. Prepare a follow-up plan of contacting them once 15 days or a month and do it!
• With casting directors or coordinators with whom you have registered, either directly or through their juniors, keep contacting them through visits or through phone(if permitted), auditions opportunities for you and other events. The objective is to keep you on their radar.

1 – Learn Your Lines 

You’ll be asked to perform a piece from the script – so make sure you know it and remember if possible, word by word. In a regular audition, you’ll get a minus mark if you’re less than word perfect. So I expect the same from you here, at the start of your career.

2 – Make Decisions How To Play The Character

Think long and hard, and decide what’s really going on in your character’s world (The one you are going to portray). What’s that about the character not mentioned in the script? Don’t just speak your lines like hundreds of others. Don't be uncertain. Decide.

3 – Don't Hesitate To Take Risks 

You’ll get nowhere by playing it safe. So listen to that inside voice of yours, telling you to "go out and don't worry". Do something different, to bring out hidden qualities in your character. Free and open up...

4 – Make The Best Use Of Space Allowed In Front Of Camera Or The Room

If there is a scene, may be your co-actor in the audition room, think how would your character move, do things and fill the space? For example, would the character pick things up? Play with objects? Use the doors and windows? Fiddle with light switches? Involve the furniture?

5 – Be On Time

The casting people are looking at your attitude just as much as your talent. So even if there’s valid reason, a train or bus strike and the city grinds to a halt, they want to see you there on time. That shows how you are committed.

Ajay Devgn (One of the top Bollywood actor-producer) says aspiring actors should be passionate about the craft and not chase stardom.

"Whenever we go to small towns and interact with people they say they have wished to act since childhood and ask how one can go about it. But I question them, 'Do you want to be a star or an actor?'
"Some say they want to be a star and I feel they can't do anything. If you are interested in acting, you've to learn it. Only then you will become a star," Ajay said.

The actor was speaking at the launch of Tata Sky's 'Acting Adda', an initiative app by actor Suniel Shetty and casting director Mukesh Chhabra.

Ajay said aspiring actors do not have a platform to showcase their talent and the initiative will give them a stage.

Suniel said many people come in the industry with dreams but often quit in the middle due to lack of opportunities. There is no money required to be in this profession.

Chhabra (*A leading casting director) said through the platform they can provide new talent to the industry.
"We will search for new actors through this platform and bring them to the industry. Every director today wants new actors so through this platform we will groom new talent and give them more work," he said.

Yes, I’m writing about why you DIDN’T get the role in an audition. Yes, even though your audition was amazing and you lit up the room with creative acting genius, you still might not get the part. I know,… you’re probably thinking, “.. But Kiran Sir, you are always so positive. Why are you talking about something negative?”
First, it’s not negative to understand why you didn’t get a job because it will free your mind of all that silly thoughts and reasons when you find out you didn’t get it. Second, and this is one of the most  important parts of learning so pay attention.
Since this is one of the most frequently asked questions to me by my present and ex students, I decided to answer it, hitting the bull’s eye!
Based on my years of experience as an actor and a short filmmaker, these are some of the reasons you didn’t get the role. They are for both-male and female actors

The Reasons

1. You’re too tall.
2. You’re too short.
3. You’re too pretty.
4. You’re not pretty enough.
5. You’re too fat.
6. You’re too thin.
7. You’re too old.
8. You’re too young.
9. You’re too serious.
10. You’re too funny.
11. You look too much like the lead (Hero/Heroine).
12. You don’t look enough like the lead.(Hero/Heroine).
13. You’re taller than the lead. (Hero/Heroine).
14. You’re shorter than the lead. (Hero/Heroine).
15. You remind the producer of his sister, and he hates his sister.
16. You are too ethnic. (For example villager, farmer, Punjabi, South Indian, Oriental looking etc.)
17. You are not ethnic enough. (For example villager, farmer, Punjabi, South Indian, Oriental looking etc.)
18. You were the first one to give audition that day.
19. You were the last one to give audition that day.
20. You look more like a friend than the lead.
21. You’re more like a lead than the  friend.
22. You look like the director’s wife and he had a fight with his wife right before he left the house this morning.
Okay, this is a small sample of the some of the reasons you didn’t get the role.
Remember, none of these are within your control. NONE!
However, there could be a positive aspect.
I strongly recommend you to do some research before you go for an audition. Perhaps, try to contact casting directors, assistant director or director before and find everything about the character you would be auditioning for. In case if you are not meeting some of the above mentioned, at least, physical profile of the character, reconsider your decision of going to auditions.
What you must understand is that your only job in an audition is to do your best work. Everything else is not up to you. The role for which you are performing in an audition is one piece of an entire puzzle. All the pieces of the puzzle must fit, for you to grab the role. The casting director, producer, and director are also fitting pieces of the puzzle together all day long. Your only job is to be the best “piece” you can be. Whether your piece of efforts fit in the slot for that piece is not up to you.
Just go to your audition. Do your best and let it go! If you’re good, they will remember you.

Don't Worry, Read And Follow These Quick Tips And Become An Actor Quickly

1. Watch a play in a theater. If you haven’t watched a play this month book a ticket now.

2. Get a script online or write a small scene and then work a scene with a friend THIS WEEK.

3. Do something you’ve never done before.

4. Get poems online and read

5. Speak a poem out loud.

6. Delete embarrassing Face book photos.

7. Breathe deeply. You can’t act when you are holding your breath.

8. Do you have an artist coordinator or an agent? Spend some money and spend the majority of your time getting at least 3 coordinators or an agent.

10. Read book on how to improve voice.

11. Get from amazon.in  "The Power of the Actor" and read chapter 1 – 3.

12. Do an acting class preferably with your acting coach. Even if it’s one hour do something THIS MONTH.

15. Congratulate people on their success.

17. Read stage Plays.

18. Watch good Hollywood classics and few Bollywood movies. In a good scene shut off the sound and watch the only acting performance.

19. Learn your lines.

20. Do a voice warm up.

21. Get a haircut with a decent style. Nothing weird and funky

22. Read every night before bed.

23. Read the first three pages out loud.

24. Watch television serials.

25. Get an acting coach.

26. Read plays out loud with friends.

27. Tell stories.

30. Create opportunities, Initiate and dance.

62. Learn history.

63. Learn the history of theater and film.

64. Travel.

65. Enjoy your own company.

66. Once or twice a month, stay up all night.

67. Learn EVERYONE’S names.

68. Help friends with auditions.

70. Get and maintain a diary. Write daily

71. Learn marketing and promotion of your career

How Living By Simple 3 Words Can Make You A Top Actor

1. Truthful

The audience likes an actors acting which truthfully portrays all about seeing and exploring the truths in life and relationships. This is why actors must be completely honest with their own truths. Try to turn the mobile camera around you with some help and see yourself in the eyes of the industry—not in their own eyes, or those of their mother/partner/friend. These people tell us what we want to hear. But actors need, to be honest with exactly what they’re bringing to the table.
Yes, this even includes being honest about your range of your acting instrument- physical and mental. (We all want to be the prettiest, sexiest, hottest, youngest, good voice etc. etc., but the majority of film and television roles represent real people portraying real lives. Just be you.) Cameras don’t lie. You can’t either. Own everything about who you are by just being honest.

2. Practical

Just as you must be honest with yourself you also have to be realistic about who you are, what you have to offer, and where you fit in. We all think we can play every part. Unfortunately, that’s not true.
Your acting roles all fall within who you are, which is set by your look and personality. They also depend on your ability to truthfully portraying a character and what new and thrilling can you add to the role.
You have to be realistic about where you fit in this industry today, not where you hopefully will be after a few years or at the end of a five-year career. Don't start dreaming that a single or few of successes makes you "The Guy" or "The Girl" for every role.
You must figure out, realistically, what roles you’re right for today based on your look, physicality, background, and acting ability, and then go after those. It’s easier to target and achieve something attainable than an unrealistic dream. Keep setting goals for yourself, just keep them realistic.

3. Impressive

In India or even Internationally Casting directors get up to 1,000 submissions per role. They don’t put out calls for “whatever,” “kind of,” or “we’re really not sure” characters. Because they are too busy and overburdened, they don't like actors who are not specific and are not good to meet. At auditions, at interviews and on the set, an actor with good body language, diction, smile, perfect and meeting etiquette plays a significant role in noticing an actor and in developing a positive attitude.

Take an honest, realistic, and specific look at who you are and how you present yourself. This can be one of the most difficult tasks for an actor, so seek help from your acting coach, teachers, artist coordinators, assistant casting directors or directors, ...whoever can help you achieve the most truthful self-evaluation. Show the industry that you're a professional in that you know exactly who you are, exactly what you have to offer, and exactly where you belong.
