My Dream is to be An Actor But How to Start My Career?

Do you really want to be an actor?
I'm beautiful! I'm a handsome hunk! How can I start my Bollywood journey?

Do you really want to be an actor?

My Answers

Getting started as an actor isn't that hard. It is one of the few jobs where you can actually just declare yourself an actor, even before you get your first audition or job. People do it all the time.Sometimes, simply mimicking people of different attitudes you see around can make you an actor. Then, even you are shifting to Mumbai, you can join and participate in local town theater groups, in community cultural program plays or by creating your friend's group, performing in the various shows or in street shows.

Caution

But, becoming successful as an actor in Bollywood or T.V. serials and in commercials is on Beginner guidee of the hardest things you can attempt, with absolutely no guarantee of any kind. This business is the most unstable and volatile in the world - the best actor doesn't always get the part, and there is so much is beyond your control that you have to be willing to be rejected on a daily basis.

I tell actors about my own journey as an actor when I coach them on how to be successful actor in this business, and it has happened specifically because I approach this as a business, and I think, I've become reasonably good at three things:

  • The art
  • The marketing / promotion and...
  • The technical aspects of acting.

If you don't develop expertise in skills in all three areas, your chances for success rapidly disappear.

The first part of  my answer is to become an expert at the art of acting: get the best training. As a beginner or if a working actor and want to improve the above 3 areas, do it if you love being in school, but if you want to get moving, don't waste your precious time of from months to years at any schools. These institutions are good once you have learned initial acting training and want to develop your networking and want to practice in a group. Otherwise, if you are a beginner you may get depressed and develop complexes observing other well-performing experienced students.
Better join a good acting coach who is an actor him/herself

Live life. Get your heart broken. Enjoy successes and failures. Suffer from rejection. Be elated when you win. Live...life. You'll need it as an actor.

Once you complete training, you go for projects that will give you experience: student films, teasers (trailers), short films, art films, theater, web series, small commercials ads and more. Each of these will give you experience in the art of acting.

But that's just the first part. There're two more parts you need to get started.

The second part of my answer is that you must become an expert at the marketing and promotion of acting: as an actor, you are a product among thousands and therefore and if you want film industry should know and use you, you have to market and promote yourself.  And if you don't have business training, find the right acting coach who can help you create the business structure you need.

Any actor you admire, that is well known and successful, is not only a good actor but also a good businessperson, without exception. They treat their careers the way a lawyer or doctor nurtures their practice. They have a brand, a product (their ability to tell stories), customers (casting directors, directors, producers etc) and they know how to get their customers' orders. They know how to market themselves (get auditions), they know how to sell themselves (audition techniques), and they know how to collect their money and hire salespeople (artist coordinators and agents) to bring them more business.

The above planning will start initially with

A. Goal setting
B. Marketing plan
C. Plan of action
All of this will give you experience in the marketing and promotion of acting. But that's still not all you need. There's one more area to explore to get started.

The third part of my answer is that you must master the science and technical part of acting: become expert in the technology you need to understand and use in the pursuit of your acting career.

This mastery of the science and technology includes creating the perfect profile for audition and websites and grooming those profiles as you gain more work and experience. It includes mastering communications using the Internet, Email, Social Media like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram and more. The technical part means understanding how cameras, lights, microphones, makeup, costumes, your voice, your face, your actions, your movements, blocking, props and all other components combine to tell a story on film or video. It means, to help you to  deliver the best performance you can by knowing your lines and being completely convincing.

This acting business in Bollywood and TV world has changed drastically toward a less conservative to an almost completely digital world, and you need to be not only aware of those changes, but know how and when to take advantage of new technology and processes.

All of this will give you experience in the science and technicalities  of acting.

One final thing

As an actor, you have to love it. You have to want it. You have to be willing to put a lot of work into it, and to remember, you may be rejected because you're too old, or too young, or too tall, or too short, or too plain, or too hot, or too creepy or...the list never ends.
To hell with it! Move on. If you can't do that, you're in trouble before you begin. If you love being a storyteller, and can handle it when you find out you didn't get the part because of XYZ,  you're in much better shape.
I do hope this helps. And I hope you do get started. And I hope that you love your life as an actor as much as I love mine as  a character actor and as an acting coach. and as a character actor. If you need help, get in touch. I will try for your chances of being a successful actor with a name and fame.

Only Dream And Screw Life | 30 Steps To Actor's Victory And Joy

An actor's steps to success and happiness

Can You Climb These Simple Steps to The Heaven of Success and Happiness?

We as an actor have desires, needs and wants. Most importantly, we pursue to be happy. Yet what is so important to us can be beyond reach for many. However, chasing happiness as an actor should come from the decisions and choices we make.
Focus on the little things, though overlooked, which are necessary, rather than the mighty actions you have to reach happiness. At the end of the day, happiness is never a destination, but a journey and every step should be one where you welcome the excitement and joys life has to offer.

Here is a list of 30 small things you can do to your victory and Joy for a  happier life

  1. Be thankful and express sincerely to people and God, irrespective of the situation. It is not about what you don’t have but about the things you currently have.
  2. You have decided to be an actor. It's your career. Pursue it. The best is to do something that combines work and fun in your life.
  3. Stop trying to be a perfect actor. No one is.
  4. Learn to tolerate others. Just as you are not perfect, people around you also cannot be perfect.
  5. Don’t compare yourself with others. Rather always try to be a better “YOU” of yourself.
  6. Start each day with a smile. It's a MUST  in an actor to be likable and improving and impressing not only film and TV people but the entire world around you
  7. Dream, work for it and always hope for the best. There are no gains or successes in worrying after all.
  8. Forgive yourself and learn to forgive others.
  9. Give social media like Facebook a break and learn to experience some life
  10.  Meditate. (Join us to learn)
  11. Give to someone in need. It doesn’t have to be money, but it could be your time or energy.
  12. You will always make mistakes, don’t ever take yourself too seriously.
  13. Listen or participate in interesting and in stimulating discussions.
  14. Be reasonable. Not everyone will accept your opinion or beliefs.
  15. Don’t try to win every argument.
  16. Set goals, they could be short term or long term. Just have something that you look forward to accomplishing.
  17. Exercise and try to keep fit looking good and full of energy. Being Bollywood's one of the major requirements for an actor, your body is your vehicle to success.
  18. Celebrate your wins, even small ones like giving a good audition performance and hug your rejections and losses in the same manner.
  19. Stop using negative words like “I can’t.” “I won’t.” “It can’t.” Always be positive and know that the world is a place of amazing possibilities.
  20. Write something. Maybe, a daily activity log for your Facebook page, your plans for the future or what you have observed in a day: people, animals, nature, weather, trees etc. It will improve your power of  observation, concentration and most importantly imagination. Or it could be a thank you note.
  21. Stop spending time with negative or people who gossip.
  22. Take risks. Learn to accept your fears and face your challenges with bravado.
  23. Learn to brush off the things beyond your control. Life will always be unfair and will not be the way we want it to. So value what you have and stop trying to hold on to the things that you cannot do anything about.
  24. Know your strengths and your weaknesses. At the end, there is so much we can do or take. Know what applies to you and stop pushing yourself too hard to where you are frustrated, unhappy and where it violates your values and desires.
  25. Accept change. You should be flexible and be adaptable. Things will never stay the same. Time has a way of healing, building and reforming. So understand that things will pass. Rather than be a victim of change, be a master of it.
  26. Stop complaining and making excuses. Rather, take on more responsibility and do more of what you can do to better a situation or the things that surround you.
  27. Eat right and sleep as much as you can. Sleep rejuvenates your body and mind. It's vital to your success as an actor.
  28. Prioritise. You cannot chase everything at once. Rather pick those pursuits that matter to you and prioritise your goals.
  29. Stop being busy. Rather, focus on being productive and appreciating the moments you have.
  30. 30. Travel and gain new experiences of the world. It will help you as an actor to “Create”  anything.
